The Chambal river winding through sandstone ravines near Mukundara

THE CHAMBAL

Where the river runs wild.

South of the forest, the reserve opens onto the Chambal — one of India's cleanest rivers, and among the last strongholds of the critically endangered gharial. Its ravines shelter mugger crocodiles, Indian skimmers, and flocks of migratory birds that arrive by the thousand each winter.

A boat safari here is a different Mukundara entirely — slower, quieter, and lit gold at either end of the day.
